Delighted to see this Kirkus Reviews review of EYELINER: A CULTURAL HISTORY! 🧿
'At first blush, a book about eyeliner would seem to be so esoteric that it would appeal only to fashion addicts, but it turns out to be an absorbing piece of work'

The Sisterhood of Journalists thecairoreview.com/q-a/the-sister… via Cairo Review I adore her so I might be biased, but this interview with Zahra Hankir demonstrates what a superb journalist, thinker & editor she is. #OurWomenontheGround is a landmark book, Penguin Books Dystel, Goderich & Bourret
Kohl is still used in parts of the MENA region, Africa and Asia for this same reason! (Which dates back to Ancient Egypt). I’m writing extensively about this in my book on the cultural history of eyeliner, due for publication by Penguin Books next year.
Just an incredible series of essay by 19 women Arab journalists covering their strife & success in navigating reporting as a woman, loss, exile, resilience & above-all a courage to share the truth of our home. I am grateful for Zahra Hankir for putting together this gem.
So grateful to have met these incredible women at an @ameja event yday honouring the late & great #ShireenAbuAkleh . Such an insightful convo about her legacy & demands for justice 🇵🇸 ❤️ The amazing Lina Abu Akleh & her brother also attended Rhana Natour Leila Barghouty ليلى البرغوثي Laila Al-Arian
'Ultimately, this is a book that pays homage to one’s ancestors, and that reminds us that through them, and their push for better lives, we can draw strength.' Zahra Hankir reads Mai Al-Nakib. lareviewofbooks.org/article/what-h…
