Same. Committing to 1-2 years of pre-doc and 5-6 years of PhD is a tough call for smart kids from low-income families who feel like they have to contribute, rather than take from the family pot. And our profession is worse for it.

Karl Smith Alice Evans The idea is that WWII enlistment created a negative shock in the supply of male scientists that drew women into STEM fields. We use this shock to create a field-level IV that allows us to estimate the effects of moving women into STEM on female participation in innovation
