Interestingly, uncompromising single-issue litmus tests seem to be en vogue in the House of Representatives while at the same time they are at a low ebb with Donald Trump's MAGA base.

When a position is popular, it will unify more members of the party which holds that position while dividing the opposite party and it will also be popular with independents.

This is not evidence for the position's intrinsic appeal to independents but just that it is popular.
