To achieve more rapid progress on the issues of sustainability, mode 2 research will need to get far greater support from funders and the reserach system which largely is focused on mode 1 research. International Science Council's reports highlight the need.

It is critical that rapidly developing technologies are subject to broad evaluation to maximise the benefits but minimise the real risks. Comprehensive frameworks for assessment are needed. The International Science Council has developed a base framework that can be built upon.
