Misleading:

There were no category 3, 4 or 5 cyclones on the Great Barrier Reef this summer.

Crown-of-thorn starfish numbers are at a low ebb on the vast majority of reefs.

Only 1 major disturbance mattered in 2024 - unprecedented heat stress due to anthropogenic heating

Lizard Island is located north of Cooktown, near the boundary of the Far Northern & Northern sections of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It’s about 300km from the northern boundary of the Central section.

In 2024, severe coral bleaching is most prevalent on most of the Reef.

Misleading:

Half the Reef was hotter for longer in 2024 than it has ever been, >75% of it bleached due to anthropogenic heating.

2 weak cyclones caused only very local wave damage & floods, & REDUCED heat stress.

Starfish densities are very low on the vast majority of reefs.

Sean Clarke A lot of people don't realize the gravity of a mass coral bleaching event. When bleaching is severe, most corals do not survive.

This is what happened in 2016:

Lethal levels of heat exposure are killing corals along 80% of the length of the Great Barrier Reef, and we have never seen anything like that.

Coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef in 2020 was severe, including in the south (below), where coral cover subsequently dropped.

There's no evidence for official claims that mortality from heat in 2020 was 'negligible'', or that the decline in cover was caused by starfish.

Australian Labor promised to 'end the neglect' and help turn the tide on species extinctions and ecosystem collapse.

That commitment hasn't been honoured.

But, above all, urgent action to curb the CAUSES of anthropogenic climate change is needed to save the world’s coral reefs.

“The world is currently in the midst of its fourth global mass coral bleaching event on record”

We’re running out of time to save coral reefs, and a liveable planet, from greenhouse gas pollution.
