Happy International Day of the Midwife!
Glasgow was the 1st place in the UK to examine & license women to practice midwifery. Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow set up the midwifery exam in 1740. These minutes show the 1st to qualify - Helen Baxter, Elizabeth Boyd, Mary Dinning & Jean Scott #IDM2024
OTD 1895 Lilian Murray became the first woman to qualify as a dentist in the UK The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Previously she attempted to enrol at the London Dental School but was refused entry to the building for fear of distracting male students, & was interviewed on the pavement outside the School!
Born #OnThisDay 1774, Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow president Robert Watt. He was also the first President of the Glasgow Medical Society and compiled ‘Bibliotheca Britannica’, believed to be one of the greatest bibliographies ever created.

Our most #PopularItem (s) are our Medical Directories and Registers which contain details of all practising physicians and surgeons who qualified in the UK from 1858 onwards. They get used in more enquiries and research visits than any other item in our collection. #Archive30
Born #OnThisDay 1791 Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow Fellow, William Mackenzie, renowned ophthalmologist and founder of the Glasgow Eye Infirmary. He was appointed Surgeon-Oculist in Scotland to Queen Victoria in 1838.
