Was the enlightenment a 'pretext for repression and violence'? Are all 'ideologies of progress' destined to produce abominations' as cold war liberals believed? Interesting LRB article after discussing 18th century racial schemas in my Beliefs, Communities and Conflict class.

Our excellent Dr Zack White in action - congratulations Zack! 😃👍

Well worth a listen - if you missed it, fear not: it's available on BBC Sounds (with extras!).

Great to see Zack's expertise recognised & his work reaching so widely: deservedly so!

Working conditions on C19th and early C20th railways were seldom pleasant, clean, or safe. One of the most complained about was the state of Brake Vans - often filthy, cold and unsanitary. One Goods Guard claimed to have found human excrament in one! Just three examples.

I'm lucky enough to have been supporting the Univ. Ports History students working on this with Dr Zack White.

It's such a great project & is producing some lovely outcomes: really looking forward to the final stages!

BREAKING 🚨 | Bosses will no longer able to punish striking workers, thanks to UNISON's Supreme Court win.

This is another crushing defeat for the government in court over its oppressive strike laws.

Monumental victory for UNISON - and the whole union movement!

The destruction by fire of Copenhagen's historic Børsen is truly shocking. It seems unthinkable. But large urban conflagrations used to be ubiquitous. If you haven't already, read this brilliant new piece on fire and American capitalism in Past and Present
