1/2 Our new study on & distribution throughout the North , led by Robby Rynek UFZ, is out 🤗! We found it everywhere (not only in so-called garbage patch) plus an unexpected 2nd hotspot not projected by ocean models 👇

A jellyfish evolved back into a single cell, doesn't need oxygen, and now lives parasitically inside the cells of other animals. Repeat: there's a single-celled jellyfish vibing O2-free INSIDE OTHER ANIMAL CELLS. Meet the hook-shaped intracellular jellyfish parasite Myxozoa 😈

Meet the lake dwelling blob animal that is actually an amorphous body of clones connected by skin and tissue and slime. They siphon water & pluck out bits of floating food, cleaning the lake while vibing as the worlds most terrifying swamp tumor. ✨freshwater bryozoans✨

Never know who you’ll meet in the Twilight Zone, where there's more fish biomass than the rest of the ocean combined! Our friendly deep-sea experts suspect this mesmerizing creature is a lobate ctenophore, a type of comb jelly. Spotted during expedition.

Returning to plug a new paper by me and Anela Choy in which we review life in the ocean's deep water-column. annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.114…
The editor kindly let us go over-length, but we still couldn't fit all the great research done by the deep-sea community.

A stunning baby rainbow tripod fish off Cozumel Mexico.
Like many deep-sea creatures, tripod fish live near the surface when young, taking advantage of the warm nutrient rich waters and looking a lot like colorful jellyfish.

What this stirred up for me is the uncomfortable reality that, as hard as science is for everyone, it so much harder for so many in the places where we need science the most. We need more Dr. Asha de Vos's in the world. Our planet is changing too fast to wait.

'Parachute science created... a false perception that a handful can save the whole...we must give everyone an equitable opportunity to engage with, explore and work in the oceans if we want to drive positive, sustainable change.'
So well said Dr. Asha de Vos!

This holiday season, break the ice by telling your family and friends how baby octopuses sometimes ride on jellyfish like little hats...[a thread 🧵]
