I just learned that W. R. Johnson, author of the seminal book on Vergil’s Aeneid, _Darkness Visible_, died yesterday. That book profoundly affected me as an undergrad. It took me a while to realize it was the same Ralph Johnson, my next door neighbor growing up in Ithaca. RIP.

Today I heard an interesting talk by Kenji Nakanishi, based on his joint work with Wang Baoxiang. While it is technically a talk in PDEs, it went in a direction that is almost entirely orthogonal to usual research in the field.
