My grandmother Emma Bruce. Spent much of her childhood in the workhouse due to her father’s poor health. Sent by the workhouse into service at fourteen. Was one of the first generation of women given the vote in 1918.

My grandmother Sarah Walker. Travelled alone to South Africa in the 1890s to marry her sweetheart. Travelled back to England as a widow during the Boer War with three tiny sons. One of the first generation of women to have the vote in 1918.

It was lovely watching the award show for on from Buckingham Palace attended by Queen Camilla. As a retired primary teacher, it was great to see writing by under 11 year olds celebrated.
