As ever, making sex ed inclusive of disabled women would make it better for everyone who doesn't fit an ideal. And really, isn't that all of us?

As Undressing Disability campaign by Enhance The UK told me, you can't consent if you don't understand what you're consenting to. This obviously creates the ideal conditions for abuse

But it also leads some care providers to believe that no consent from disabled people is valid, and so to deny us sexual agency

Studies have linked lack of accessible sex ed to high rates of painful sex, STIs, and unplanned pregnancy among disabled women

Perhaps most alarming is the proven link between a lack of sex ed and astoundingly high rates of sexual abuse for disabled women

I never really received sex education that was relevant to me as a disabled person. As I grew up that meant I was deeply worried about sex and not empowered to make decisions

But that's nothing compared to some of the ramifications for other disabled women

My strongest memory of sex ed is a class in which we were encouraged to put questions in a hat but I couldn't write mine down

'It’s been 15 years since that class, but I think about it often, both in my personal life and in my work as a disability activist. The sexual disempowerment of disabled women is a persistent issue that crops up again and again.'
