Nate Silver, it seems that for you, politics was a sporting event that was fun for oddsmaking. Which is a very 2012 point of view.

Michael McDonald does scholarship and work that is aimed at understanding politics - and he helps citizens engage. What about that is dumb?

Yes, it reveals several issues about Nate Silver:

1) Doesn't realize what the Wisconsin redistricting battle is about: self-governance.
2) Thinks a snarky oddsmaker-like comment is a useful contribution.
3) Substantively wrong about likely Presidential/House outcome.

A perfect encapsulation of Nate Silver. Gets the analysis part wrong (the ruling is about state legislative maps, not congressional) while being gratuitously awful. Thank god ABC fired him.

Today, Brennan Center filed an amicus brief on behalf of historians Gautham Rao (same username on bsky) Jane Manners & Richard John in Relentless v. Dep't of Commerce, a dire SCOTUS challenge to the federal government's power to do its job.

New from Dan Balz in The Washington Post: washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/…. Similar to Katie Fahey 👍✌’s grassroots efforts in Michigan, Ohio can defend democracy by helping CitizensNotPoliticians pass an initiative in 2024 while also raising support for !

I trash WaPo a lot, and usually deservedly. But this article by Dan Balz about how to reform our democracy is actually really thought-provoking and well-done. A lot of good ideas in here. washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/…

The problems with the U.S. political system can, at times, feel overwhelming and intractable. But solutions can become reality when ordinary citizens engage. wapo.st/3RFs0sO
