New York City Council GrowNYC Adrienne Adams NYC Council Member Sandy Nurse Justin Brannan Gonna need a lot more anonymous donors soon the way services are being cut in this city.
The Mayor Eric Adams’s November Plan cut community composting. Thankfully, a philanthropic donor chipped in to keep 65 GrowNYC workers on the job. Yet, 50+ workers will still be laid off and big compost sites will close by January.
My statement with Adrienne Adams & Justin Brannan
Thanks to an anonymous donation, GrowNYC’s compost collection operations will continue through FY24 and save 65 jobs.
We're relieved, but philanthropy shouldn't supplant funding for city programs.

NEW: The LLC Transparency Act has been delivered to Governor Kathy Hochul. She now has 10 days to sign, veto or offer chapter amendments.
The bill passed w/ bipartisan support and has been endorsed by NY AG James, Tom DiNapoli, 3 DAs, Times Union ed board, Hotel and Gaming Trades Council + more. 🧵
Today the NYC Progressive Caucus rallied with community composters and organizations to say hell no to the fifth set of city budget cuts since Mayor Eric Adams’s term began.
The Mayor is laying off 100 workers who run compost at farmers markets, the botanical gardens and more. Unacceptable.

And right now, over 100 members who do this work are going to be laid off on January 1st because of Mayor Adams’ cuts. Composting is environmental justice.” - NYC Council Member Sandy Nurse
Thank you to the Harbor School for testifying at the @nyccouncil NYC Sanitation oversight hearing. They advocated to keep funding community composting and protect the 100+ compost workers who are set to be laid off by January. Thank you for raising your voices! 🙌🏽
