Have had this open as a tab for a few months. Finally read it. Fascinating. Really good example of how we can think with history. And for a historian of my generation, the historicisation of Joan Scott is especially interesting.

This is very interesting about ZS. Not sure how fair all of it is, and some of it applies to the wider LRB, NYRB etc brigade. Higher dilettantism.

Note to historians.

Britain is England, Wales & Scotland.

If by Britain, you mean Britain & Ireland, then say Britain & Ireland.

If by Britain, you mean Britain & Northern Ireland, then say the UK.

Sometimes this means saying ‘the history of…’ rather than ‘British history’

Some snaps taken by Sylvia Sayer in 1978. Huts at Wotter Tor.

Would be very surprising to see agricultural rutting like that today.

Times have changed.

If you've ever wondered what Eric Hobsbawm's 'Primitive Rebels', Peter Laslett's demographic history, Keith Thomas' Religion and the Decline of Magic, and E P Thompson's 'moral economy' owe to anthropology...

Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (Darwin College) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the The Spectator libido section.
