Athayde's latest blog = The facultative shift of sex ratios displayed by some bees is a remarkable survival tool. The power to quickly tilt the offspring's sexual balance could make the difference for a species' success. Blog @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com/2024/04/16/som…

We take a look at 'Biodiversity and Glasgow University' in our latest blog. One area of increasing activity is the University’s approach to greenspace management. More @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com/2024/04/11/bio…

What to plant for bumblebees in April 🪴

Change and plant one (or more!) of these bumblebee favourites. When they flower, they will provide nectar and pollen for hungry bumblebees 🐝

How about a little cherry blossom to start the day? A great source of spring pollen and nectar for passing insects, these trees brighten up any green space at this time of year.

Clarke’s mining bees are worth looking out for at this time of year. They forage on willow catkins in spring, and can form large nesting aggregations.

With bulbs it is worth remembering that daffodils, whilst very popular, are not the best for pollinators. Why not supplement them if you can with some pollinator friendly bulbs – you might try snowdrop, crocus, allium and grape hyacinth. More info @ nature.scot/doc/planting-p…

Primroses are in flower here now. We are talking about the wild primrose, the pale custard-yellow plant that flowers amongst distinctive crinkly leaves in clusters beneath hedges, around woodlands and on verges. It is a particular favourite of bee-flies. wordpress.com/post/scottishp…

Lovely to see (and hear) so many bumblebees on willow around Loch Morar earlier this week. Willow catkins are more than simply attractive to look at; they are a huge bonus for bees in very early spring when food sources are scarce.

The Arabica coffee story exemplifies the reach of pollination services. Income of small farmers, revenues of developing countries, conservation of tropical forests, let alone your morning caffeine kick. More in Athayde's blog @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com/2024/04/02/but…

Aberdeen's bus shelter replacement programme has seized an opportunity. Green roofs = absorb rainwater, capture particles, support placemaking ambitions. Wildflower & sedum species support native pollinators. Pic courtesy of Aberdeen City Council
