Visitors to Grant Grove this week may notice the Big Stump East Pile Burns, which are taking place southeast along Highway 180 as it enters Kings Canyon NP. Part of the Big Stump Trail that goes through this area is closed during this project, but otherwise impacts are minimal.

We are remembering Dan Holmes today, who lost his life in an accident on the Grant West Prescribed Burn on this day in 2004. 19 years later, he is remembered by his colleagues, and his name is known to many others that never knew him. We send love to Dan's family and loved ones.

Clearer skies ahead! We have finished all planned ignition operations on the Redwood Fire, having brought the western flank of the fire downslope to the containment line. We expect smoke impacts to drop off significantly in the coming days.

Fun fact: While the terms 'sequoia' and 'redwood' were sometimes used interchangeably in the past, they are in fact two different genera and species. Here is a side-by-side comparison (sequoias on the left, redwoods on the right) that shows some of the more obvious differences!

Lightning strike fires are common in the Sierra Nevada. The Redwood Fire is 1 acre in size, burning at low intensity in an area without recent fire history. Firefighters report that thus far fire effects are beneficial. Incoming wet weather is expected to slow its growth.
