Frank Caws's first work in was the Pottery Building in High Street East (1868). Built by the Backhouse family as an East-End community centre, it was named after a pottery that once occupied the site. The ornamental Gothic design anticipated Caws's Elephant Tea House.

I was very happy to be back in Hull today for the ceremonial first drop of the restored time ball on the Guildhall. It looked fabulous as it glided down. Well done to everyone Historic England, Hull City Council and The National Lottery.

The lockdown cocoa plant from York Cocoa House survives! Grown from seed since March 2020, its stem is now about 35cm tall and its next pair of leaves are getting ready to come.

I like Estonia's preprogrammed piano: why mess with your singing by playing your own piano if you don't have to?

Another blow to architectural historians this week was the death of John Newman, twice author of the Kent volumes of Pevsner, former deputy director of the Courtauld. A deeply intellectual, kind and gentle man. He was my PhD supervisor and I will miss him.
