to Roho enjoying the comforting last droplets of milk – so much in fact, he keeps suckling long after the contents are drained! He’s now living at our Ithumba Unit where he’s being slowly weaned ahead of a life back in the wild. His story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/roho

The first thing you notice about Mayan are his fiery-hued eyes. They are the most extraordinary golden colour, unlike any we have seen in an elephant. Above all else, they symbolised his intense will to survive, after he was orphaned: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/mayan

An unfortunate injury, right on the rump, left this male elephant in a tight spot: if he was to avoid sepsis & live to sire more calves, he needed treatment, fast. In a chain reaction, our pilot spotted him on a routine patrol, precipitating an emergency operation help him:…

Meet Toto! Among the hundreds of orphan rescues we have played a part in, his story stands out as extraordinary. It began when an ex-orphan herd personally delivered the lone baby to our Ithumba Unit: he clearly was not a calf of theirs & we suspect they frogmarched him to us,…

We can tell already… the move to Voi will be the making of Rokka. She cherished being the de facto leader of the Kaluku Nursery herd, but we knew she was ready to learn from older elephants. So far, her graduation has borne out our hopes… she radiates happiness in her new home.

to a very tiny Mwinzi revelling in the dust bath. At the time, this little bull was only around 6 months old. He’d just been rescued 2 months prior & was still settling in: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/mwinzi

Again & again, we witness the incredible instincts of elephants. A recent op to treat orphan Barsilinga, who returned home for help, is a powerful reminder of their intuitive abilities & testimony to the capacity for trust they have in those who earn it: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/b…

The ‘Voi Kids’ are a remarkable group of orphans rescued at a slightly older age & brought directly to our Voi Unit for recovery - skipping the Nursery stage! Adopters might be familiar with Epiya’s story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/r…. We hope to introduce you to the others soon!

The power of a trunk hug cannot be underestimated, physical affection helping the orphan elephants to bond as a family. Taking their cue, we're sending virtual hugs to our adopters. We’re curious to know: who do you adopt?

This is our favourite kind of family portrait: orphan elephant Galana nursing her calf Gala. Orphaned as a new born, Galana is now flourishing in the wild as a mum of 2. Curiously, Njema (R) isn’t her calf, but since the herd all live together, they might as well be family!

One decade. That’s how long it can take to raise an orphaned elephant from rescue to re-wilding. Our Keepers accompany them every single step of the way. Wherever you are in the world, you can support an orphaned elephant’s journey through an adoption too:

We often joke that Raha is part rhino, part tortoise. She operates at one speed & that speed is slow... she just appreciates a leisurely pace to life!

Raha enjoys sleeping in & embraces the day when she is well and ready. We are happy to move at her speed — it’s nice for all of…

Kuishi (right) is on the cusp of independence, but our Keepers say its her love for Esoit (left) that keeps her rooted to the dependent herd. So many things affect an orphans’ readiness to go wild – friendships being one of them!
