Take no pride in your possession, in the people at your command, in the youthfulness that you have. Time loots away all these in a moment. Leaving aside all these, after knowing their illusory nature, realise the state of Brahman and enter into it.

Use your power of discrimination to move within yourself. Always seek and desire happiness, which is your true state. Since happiness is your true state, it can never burden you while sorrow which is not your true nature is a real burden.

This treatise called 'Knowledge of Self' is written for the sake of those whose sins have been destroyed by austerities and who, with a tranquil mind and free from attachment, long for liberation. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

‘Wealth is calamitous’, thus reflect constantly: the truth is that there is no happiness at all to be got from it. To the rich, there is fear even from his own son. This is the way with wealth everywhere. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

You are the Self, the infinite Being, the pure, unchanging Consciousness, which pervades everything. Your nature is bliss and your glory is without stain. Because you identify yourself with the ego, you are tied to birth and death. Your bondage has no other cause.

As long as there is the ability to earn and save, so long are all your dependants attached to you. Later on, when you come to live with an old, infirm body, no one at home cares to speak even a word with you. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

The gold put in furnace loses its impurities and regains its original true nature. In the same way, through meditation, the mind gets rid of the impurities like delusion and attachment and attains the Reality, which is its true eternal state.

All the manifested world of things and beings are projected by imagination upon the substratum which is the Eternal All-pervading Vishnu, whose nature is Existence-Intelligence; just as the different ornaments are all made out of the same gold.

The self undergoes no modification, nor can knowledge arise in any manner from individual consciousness (alone). And yet, one ignorantly imagines that the individual soul knows, does and sees everything well. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

When youthfulness has passed, where is lust and its play? When water is evaporated, where is the lake? When the wealth is reduced, where is the retinue? When the Truth is realised, where is the bonding with the outside world? #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

One should become aware of oneself, indivisible, and perfect; free from identification with all things transient, such as one’s body, functions, mind, and the sense of being the doer, for all these are the product of ignorance. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

Eliminating all limitations with the help of the passage 'not this, not this,' one should realize

The self appears to be conditioned by virtue of ignorance. But when that (ignorance) is destroyed, the unconditioned self shines by its own light, like the sun when the clouds have disappeared. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

Never identify yourself with the mass of flesh that is your body. You are in fact the True transcendental self that is actually an undifferentiated awareness, which is never affected or altered by time: past, present or future. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara

Give up identification with this mass of flesh as well as with what thinks it a mass. Both are intellectual imaginations. Recognise your true self as undifferentiated awareness, unaffected by time, past, present or future, and enter Peace.

Thy wealth is no assurance of heaven: Therefore be not vain of thy wealth, or of thy family, or of thy Oath. All are fleeting, all must change. Know this and be free. Enter the joy of the Lord. Seek neither peace nor strife. #AdiShankara charya #AdiShankara
