During the 1977 occupations/sit ins of federal buildings by disabled people for funding and implementation of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, people used ASL to communicate strategy through doors because cops couldn't understand it. Just saying. In case someone needs it.

I'd love to speak to college organizers who have set up D/deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent contingents at campus encampments for a piece. My email is in my bio and my DM’s are open. I’m curious about how disabled students are showing up for these protests.

College Leaders:

There are worse things than having an encampment on your campus. Having your students and faculty violently arrested are among them.

History tells us that using police or military to quell campus unrest only leads to worse outcomes.

Find another way.

Indiana University police department is presently brutalizing students who have been camped in a so-called free speech zone for less than a day.

At least 24 arrests, including faculty members, with a sniper stationed on the roof beside the meadow.

Protest is a central part of Boston’s history, including political expression and student activism.

There is a distinction between removing encampments to ensure safe access to a public right of way and using physical violence against students engaging in peaceful expression.

They charged her with battery of an officer and disorderly conduct… for screaming at the police that brutalized a student “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

Arrested for being shocked by the brutality, and wrongfully charged.
