Thanks Alison. I am no hero but having survived childhood cancer myself, and witnessed the devastating effects of end-stage diabetes on my Mum during my teens, I entered medicine knowing how important empathy was. I then just had to prove it.

Which why those who go about loudly proclaiming mental illness does not exist to politicians are playing into the hands of those on the right who rub the their hands with glee and want to cut benefits
