“A paradox of neoliberalism … is that, when commercial-style governance is applied in traditionally less commercial spheres – such as libraries, universities, publishing & the public sector – it is often applied more rigidly & narrowly than in genuinely corporate sectors”

Why?

Great piece, awful story. Time to come clean about ‘austerity’: the fiscal rationale is hugely overblown. We are tightening belts within a constraint that is a contrivance, to manage inflation while other parts of the economy stoke inflation with abandon edition.cnn.com/interactive/20…

I was delighted to provide an endorsement for this wonderful book. Two whip-smart women sharing their observations of Australian politics and literary culture in the late 20th century, painstakingly edited and highly readable - loved it:

Terrific photo of the young Paul Auster! In 1968, before social media & cell phone recordings, NYPD were brutal with nightsticks; occupying a building could result in serious beatings. One very good thing about social media.

And when they later learned about the Altair 8800, they felt users should be able to program it using BASIC.

The struck a deal with the company.

The Altair 8800 became the first successful PC.

And Gates and Allen had a fast growing software business.

Caméo de Paul Auster, qui vient de nous quitter à 77 ans, dans l'adaptation cinématographique d'un de mes romans préférés, 'La Musique du hasard' (publié en 1990, réalisé par Philip Haas en 1993)...
RIP Paul Auster (1947 - 2024)

On the NYRB Classics tip, Stoner is goated for sure, but this is my first-team All-NYRB.

I’ve gifted Black Wings to like 5 different people, and the Comyns is a total killer. Feels like a Mike Leigh flick.

For me, Paul Auster was first and foremost a great storyteller. His novels have such narrative momentum that I was happy to follow wherever he went. It may be Philistine of me to say, but his New York Trilogy novels were the first nouveaux romans that were also page-turners.
