PEN America, after being critiqued by the writing community, cancels a festival, and now folks are annoyed.

Notable that the concept of “anti-Palestinian racism” has never entered the American political lexicon. Amid all the concern about Israeli brutality inciting antisemitism, no one stops to wonder about the ideology that makes Palestinian suffering so acceptable.

I just drove by a retirement community in Baltimore. Residents are gathered outside wearing keffiyehs, waving Palestinian flags. Not a huge crowd but out of frame they stretch the block. Heartwarming!

Framing this as a “suppression of discourse” is galling. PEN America expected writers to keep providing them with labor and time while ignore the org’s glaring “except for Palestine” stance. Writers said no and the org has refused to change. So writers have withdrawn their labor.

Noelle McAfee says she was arrested after telling a cop to stop “pummeling” a young person who was already on the ground. She stood 4 feet away from police. They told her to move; she said “no,” and they took her. She tears up remembering the kid, wondering if they are OK.

Calls to not just get rid of Fenves but the entire “hypercompensated” administrative class that called cops to tear gas our kids and colleagues 2x in one day

Nasty article, and shame on PEN America for sharing it. The implication that Palestinians and those in solidarity with them are hysterically using the term genocide is insulting, inhumane, and lacking in any sense of moral consciousness. Nossel and Boylan need to resign.

When lousy leaders face consequences & refuse to resign, the playbook is 1) play the victim to avoid responding to critics & 2) claim those who withdraw are destroying the organization which can’t exist without its lousy leader.

@PENAmerica deserves better.

More of the same stereotyping from the Atlantic. The theme hasn't changed: they continue painting those who've critiqued PEN America as folks who just don't know how to have a civil disagreement. They will never see it, I guess. Onward.
