Yesterday I got left on an inaccessible deserted cove miles from habitation, once a small landing port for people long since gone. My company was a robin and a sea eagle. I imagined a story passed through their generations that one day humans would come back. And it was me.

At an antique store here in Savannah, Georgia, stumbled upon a veritable treasure trove of Harper’s Weeklys spanning the tense, dread-filled period leading from March 1861—barely one month before the beginning of the Civil War—to July 1861. A short 🧵 of highlights: (1/6)

“The consequences of a partial or complete defeat would be calamitous…But we have a lazy habit in the comfortable West — away from Europe’s front line in east and south Ukraine — of wishful thinking and being unprepared for bad surprises.”

Love this: makes me think of my wild days in the 70s when I had a Triumph TR6 convertible, beautiful blue and white, though my windows also fell into the door frame. I've given up cars now and take public transport or cabs.

In a swerve from geopolitical observations, this is my lament for the part-exchanged car. I'm not sure quite why Alastair Benn and Paul Lay thought that the sensitive photo accompaniment would be a massive pile of scrap metal. Not for the faint-hearted!
