In a major crackdown, skins of 5 , 1 fishing cat & 1 leopard cat, & large quantity of scales were seized by the Odisha Forest Department.

Seven accused have been arrested in this connection.

Indian Coast Guard ship Rani Durgavati on patrol in Palk Strait apprehended a fishing boat B GOBIGA carrying 49 kg banned Sea Cucumber about 15 miles from TN coast. Sea Cucumber is an endangered species & its hunting is prohibited under Schedule I of Act 1972.

smuggling is reportedly on rise along West Bengal, Odisha & Andhra Pradesh, with Visakhapatnam becoming a safe route for transport. E.g., in March, DRI seized 396 protected turtles at Visakhapatnam railway station.

Four cockatoos seized at Chennai airport from two men who landed from Malaysia.

The birds were concealed in plastic cages with holes for ventilation & were smuggled to cater to the thriving in Chennai.

Of the 160 species in India, 26 are protected under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Nearly 100 are included in CITES Appendices.

Mizoram excise officials seize 98 kg of scales.

Last year, TRAFFIC & WWF-India released a pangolin seizure analysis in India for 2018-2022, which found 1203 endemic pangolins trafficked for illicit wildlife trade.

7 arrested for illegal trade of two tusks in Bengaluru.


In Asian elephants only males have tusks. Every poaching event further skews the sex ratio, which constrains breeding rates for the species.
