For all my brothers and sisters in Alberta: the Carbon tax increase is .03 cents April 1. Danielle Smith just took your $750 tax rebate back and added a .13 cent fuel tax. If you want the rest of us to take you seriously, get angry about all of it. Not some of it.

Today’s provincial bill is designed to try and stop municipalities like Edmonton and Calgary from directly accessing funds for housing, because the Premier wants to be a gatekeeper and use those funds for her own priorities.

It’s my job to help ensure federal programs help us in Alberta.

What Danielle Smith announced today is aimed at stopping that. She’d rather hold back municipalities like Edmonton and Calgary than work with Ottawa to solve problems.

Bill 17 authorizes the minister to appoint a CEO and Chief Scientific Officer. Query who that CSO will be and whether they are selected for their expertise in addictions or whether they are selected due to sharing the government's ideological views on harm reduction? /9

CORE can (should) make bylaws re: conflicts of interest. Will board members have financial conflicts re: for-profit delivery of recovery services? Also curious who Recovery Alberta contracts with to deliver services and if quality of care is effectively monitored. /8

CORE reports to minister rather than being arm's length and reporting to the assembly as a whole. Public should have access to research and recommendations provided by CORE. Transparency rather than secrecy. Many concerns with the independence of this organization from gov. /6

CORE will be governed by a board. Unclear who will sit on that board, but those ministerial appointees could be telling of the direction of the organization (eg concerning if people with a financial interest in for-profit recovery beds are on the board). /5

CORE mandate: conduct & support research, evaluations, innovations; provide advice, info, reports; support the provision of services; provide provincial, national & int'l leadership. Will CORE or minister set the research agenda (ie will the research be ideologically driven)? /4

...with the bill repeatedly emphasizing recovery (eg the Gov 'recognizes that recovery is possible for Albertans facing mental health & addiction challenges”). Unclear how we can adopt best practices & an evidence based model with an unwillingness to consider harm reduction. /3

Danielle Smith’s mantra is consistently that governments shouldn’t meddle in areas that they don’t belong in.

So why is she trying to practice medicine without a license by dictating how Alberta physicians can treat patients?
