This is the most dismal start to a new year I can remember. Genocide conducted with impunity, climatic overshoot, biodiversity collapse, a globally resurgent far right, and systemic poverty. None of this gets better without mass mobilization. We've got a fight on our hands.

The apartheid wall was built by Israel in 2002 in the West Bank, at a total length of 708 kilometres (440 mi), 9 meters tall

Palestinians turned such an ugly structure of separation and segregation into a canvas of beautiful and funny art

a thread of my favorite wall art:

A great COP28 thread 'yet, even in this most favourable environment, the industry & its governmental backers failed to prevent what people and most impacted countries demanded'

Pacific climate leaders have criticised the new COP28 deal, released overnight after marathon negotiations. The deal calls on all countries to move away from the use of fossil fuels but doesn't include 'phase out' language.

In just a few short years the movement to end the fossil fuel era and take down the fossil fuel industry with all of its perceived impenetrability has gone from being perceived as inconsequential, to heretical, to undeniably and profoundly essential and unstoppable.

The loudest statement at this plenary is the absence of small island states when the gavel went down.

Source described the stark contrast from the overflow room: while the plenary applauded, 'here there is only anger or stunned silence.'

More than 1,000 cryosphere scientists from around the world have signed an open letter to negotiators at saying that “1.5°C is not merely preferable to 2°C. It is the only option. ...because of the Cryosphere response, even 2°C is too high.”

palestinian journalists are giving us completely new ways to think about journalism, with totally new ethics and methods—including demonstrating journalism as a communal act, rooted in communal care and love. not scoops. not competition. teamwork and love in the public interest.

It’s not over folks. The majority of countries called for stronger language than this. This is just the first text. Message your Ministers ask them to stand firm for phase out of all fossil fuels that is fair and financed.
