Well, this blew my mind almost as much as the allegations that a sitting US Senator accepted bribes from the Egyptian government. Wow.

Two more senior Dems — Dick Durbin and Patty Murray, president pro tempore, call on Menendez to resign. “If Senator Menendez refuses to resign, I encourage the Senate Ethics Committee to open an investigation into this, separate from the ongoing criminal case,” Murray said

Wow, this is a big domino to fall against Menendez.

Two weeks ago the Biden admin waived rights conditions on $235m in military aid to Egypt on 'national security grounds.'

Turns out, Egypt was actively undermining U.S. national security (not to mention our democracy) at that very moment. Congress cannot let the aid go forward.

I would genuinely love to have a conversation w/ these authors about Salah Soltan, a US LPR unjustly detained in Egypt for TEN YEARS now despite no evidence of wrongdoing.

I applaud the Iran efforts. But it's well past time to apply the clear pressure to Egypt to release Salah.

Super important context in this thread re the Menendez story: the alleged bribes were paid for by adding a fee to all US meat exports to Egypt, basically a tax on Egyptian consumers that paid for sacks of gold bars in New Jersey

For anyone who has ever argued that the Egyptian government doesn’t care that much about US military aid, please read this.

Goes without saying that the $235m in military aid to Egypt approved by Biden admin last week cannot go forward.

Congress has to step in and hold the funds before we reward Egypt further for undermining our democracy AND repressing its people.

The details in the Menendez indictment are absolutely wild. What a partner Egypt is to the United States!
