Happy New Year! I'm big on resolutions. #2023 was learning 5 new recipes like this delectable dark chocolate breakfast souffle. For #2024 I want to read 5 great books and write 5 new stories. My first will be All The Light We Cannot See. What should my other 4 be?

Lots of festive fun at our palliative care appreciation party last night! Our white elephant gift exchange ranged from poop themed presents (this is after all) to a visit from a former presidential candidate!

Last month - without much fanfare - the AAMC released data from the most recent medical school application cycle.

The number of applicants was down again (falling just below the number of applicants from 5 years ago).

Meanwhile, the overall acceptance rate increased to 45.2%.

Starting next year, ERAS will give a 60% fee reduction to certain financially-needy residency applicants.

Look, lowering ERAS fees is a good thing.

But for all the publicity it’s received, the actual number of dollars we’re talking about is… not many.

How to give feedback without being a jerk:

1. Be a coach, not a critic. Aim to help, not attack.

2. Don't assert opinion as fact. You're sharing your subjective reaction, not the objective truth.

3. Be honest, not brutal. Be direct in what you say, but kind in how you say it.
