The Cary Countdown 🦢

Legacy and Patronage: The Cary family’s influence extended beyond their time at Torre Abbey. In the early 20th century, they funded Torbay Hospital and became its patrons.

The current children’s ward, named after Louisa Cary.

This summer the incredible @440theatre return to Torre Abbey, with a British Summertime Shakespeare Double Bill!

Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, both performed by only four actors in forty (ish!) minutes each!

Our community book shop is fully stocked 📚

Organised and managed by one of Torre Abbey's dedicated volunteers, the books are available for £1 - £2, with all donations going to Torre Abbey.

Our contractors have been busy in the Ballroom during our project, restoring the ballroom window frames and shutters. Their vital work ensures we keep most of the original wood, preserving our history whilst bringing it back to life.

Cary Countdown

Sir George Cary was a royalist.

After the Restoration of 1660, Charles II acknowledged Sir George’s loyalty by presenting him with a copy of Van Dyck’s portrait of the children of Charles I.

This painting still hangs in the dining room at Torre abbey today.

In preparation for our Ball Room to be repainted and the floor sanded, our dedicated collections team had to move two very large....and I can confirm… very heavy marble statues to a more suitable location.
