Large-scale, long-term datasets provide evidence of declines in species globally.

And digital technologies, such as smartphone apps and AI, are transforming how we address data gaps, track insect populations, and engage with nature.

Doing ecological studies during a biodiversity crisis is difficult. In 2002 I began studying Marsh Tits in an ancient woodland to see how a functioning population worked. After 10 yrs I realised I was now documenting their slide towards local extinction:

A pleasant but windy pm on Friday, with 15 species recorded, including Nephus quadrimaculatus (Ivy LB), Scymnus haemorrhoidalis (Red-rumped LB), Stethorus pusillus (Dot LB), and the smallest 14-spot I've ever seen, with 16-spot for comparison.
