Very excited about our new paper! Lisbeth Hordley & I show that if you have long grass in your garden youβll see more butterflies, that more long grass is better & that the effects are greater for gardens in more urban & arable landscapes. sciencedirect.com/science/articlβ¦ π§΅

Recorded my first Orange-tips of 2024 in SU5682 - a BC Upper Thames 2km square with none recorded in 2020-23 (lacking spring visits in these years). Lots more spring gaps to fill in 2024 (see Hairstreak Spring issue 121, page 26). Please visit these gaps and add records!
I think this is the green longhorn moth Adela reaumurella with its extra long antenna, hard to photograph this active tiny moth in a strong wind. Several found today in an ancient wood in Chilterns National Landscape BC Upper Thames

The garden moth trap (Caversham, Berks) seems very slow to get going this spring. Only three moths this morning, one the ever present Hebrew character, and two Brindled Beauty. Iβm sure it will pick up soon!
