#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint I believe ADA should be treated in the same way as our counter-terrorism strategy so age isnโ€™t limited here really
Prevent = DA + young perps
Pursue = only when necessary (punitive measures)
Protect = victims/survivors
Prepare = education, education, education!

Meena Kumari #100Women ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ป #WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ It's a really hidden issue in my view. There's a significant gap academically as well as in policy & practice.
I really think is a public heath issue but society hasn't realised yet & we need to consider all options to reduce it

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint So glad you are discussing this we deliver lots of training and this always comes up about adolescent domestic abuse in private and public spaces and the notion of how 16+ is dealt with as oppose to under 16. Even when we look at support services it differs regionally etc

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint Iโ€™m in two minds. No age limit seems sensible. But 14-16 is a key age where behaviours need to be nipped in the bud before reaching adulthood. A change in legislation could mean more punitive action, protective measures i.e DVPNs and IDVA support

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint And porn.
Mainstream porn is so violent and misogynistic, they think choking, BDSM and pain/disrespect is normal ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint A recent piece in Guardian shared a recent survey. It said โ€œone in five had a positive view of Tateโ€. Surely a better headline is 4 in 5 donโ€™t. The use of the 1 in 5 actually gets in way of prevention work. As we know bad news sells a story.

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint We often fail to use social norming to address harmful behaviours. The way young men are often portrayed suggests a majority are behaving badly or most support likes of Andrew Tate. The reality is they donโ€™t. This approach gets in the way of prevention. 1/2 .

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint Barriers are victim not recognising they are being DA'd. The AP thinking the DA relationship is preferable to home/parents, disengaged from services, isolated, SEND/ND, thinking its the norm.

Sgt Sam Parfett #WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint all under 18s are children. To take a term domestic abuse designed for adults and apply it to children creates problems. Can police address the problematicc possibly criminal behaviour without giving it an adult label?

Q2. What are the barriers to supporting victims and those carrying out harmful behaviours when they are under 16 and what can be done about them?

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint This paper was one of the drivers of my work on schools in my time with Scottish vru. Many young people donโ€™t see abuse as a violence. iriss.org.uk/resources/videโ€ฆ itโ€™s why we must help both young men and women to better define abuse

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint Perpetrators are mostly dealt with by Youth Justice Services, and outcomes often do not match the severity of offending i.e CR/diversionary work. Victim/offender support however is enhanced as age brings involvement from schools, social services and Public Protection.

Caroline #WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Absolutely. So concerning. We are seeing more children in intimate relationship with each other where strangulation is on the rise for example. The Andrew Tate effect impacts this generation too

#WeCops Ruth Weir ๐Ÿ’™ Katy Barrow-Grint I worry that there is more emphasis on trying to prove that it doesnโ€™t come under the โ€˜definitionโ€™ of domestic, than considering the complex and serious nature of how they can escalate
