What's up with those people who incessantly condemn Israeli govt's abuses but not CCP's and those who condemn CCP but not Israeli govt? Can we care about human rights for the sake of human rights, rather than condition it on the country's relation with US govt?

On the night of Taiwan election, the amount of content on Chinese social media that commended the free and fair election in Taiwan and criticized the lack thereof in China suggests that there could in fact be many in China who support democracy. My piece👇🏻 thediplomat.com/2024/01/watchi…

A man in Shannxi was detained for 10 days for 'berating' local police online and had to make a video to apologize. This is the kind of punishment levelled at ordinary people for the slightest criticism of some lowest level of govt, and it happens all the time in China.

Then even this grim number might not reflect the true situation. The CCP is now tasting the bitter fruit of its own oppression — 30 years of abusive one-child policy during which countless women were subjected to forced abortion, sterilization and birth control.

'The government created an environment where it is easy for antisemitic content to thrive.'

FH's Yaqiu Wang 王亚秋 discusses China's sophisticated internet censorship apparatus with The Washington Post's Josh Rogin.

My piece @Guardian describes how Taiwan's rebellious history has been forged through social movements. In its unprecedented third term the DPP must dare to take risks to win the hearts of young people.

I'm seeing quite some censorship of comments praising Taiwan's election (not the result). While the majority of Chinese citizens might be pro-unification, many do want democracy, which Taiwan people (mostly Han Chinese) have and they don't. To the CCP, this is very dangerous.

Calling Lai 'pro-independence' is inaccurate. All candidates are 'pro-status quo.' The difference is in the approaches. Taiwan people just want to live their lives and not getting bombed, and now they have resoundingly chosen a leader who believe the best way is to stay tough.

Sitting here in the US and having gone through Jan 6 and all that, the moments when Hou Yu-ih and Ke Wen-je readily conceded just brought me to tears. Thank you Taiwan politicians and voters for giving us hope for the future of democracy. 你们辛苦了!

I always think voters in swing states in the US are the most powerful voters in the world because who they choose for president affects so many people around the globe. That's how I feel about voters in Taiwan right now. Best luck today, everyone!

So many hopes and desires are being projected on Taiwan people right now -- 'Vibrant democracy under tough condition!' 'a defeat for China's autocracy!' All I want to say is: vote whoever you want, and tell the foreigners to go away, including this one!

Anyone who has a job looking at Chinese social media these days should receive free and mandatory mental health services.

One might think with worsening economic conditions, Chinese people will become less supportive of a war with Taiwan. The opposite is likely true, while your own life lacks dignity and hope, you resort to hate, jingoism and aggression to cover your pain deep down inside.

Not surprised. This company has repeatedly lied through its teeth (and then kept getting caught). Now TikTok has further restricted the public's ability to independently assess whether it is acting on behalf of the CCP to control content on the platform.

The videos and images coming out of Gaza are very disturbing and deserve the world's attention and urgent action, but no visuals don't mean people are not in absolute agony. It could just mean some govt is extraordinarily good at concealing atrocity.

Intelligence can be wrong or partial, and when it is leaked to the media, its accuracy can further diminish. Same can be said with regard to leaks from CCP insiders. While we are all desperate to know the inner works of the CCP, we should take leaks with a grain of salt.

Read the piece👇🏻 Apparently, a branch of All China Women’s Federation “paid more to a tech company to police social-media comments than its budget for women’s advocacy.” The org that is tasked to advance women’s rights is now squarely a tool of the CCP to suppress women’s rights.

As Jimmy Lai's farcical trial continues, foreign companies are retreating from Hong Kong, local residents are migrating out, and fewer tourists are coming to the city. Is this what the CCP and HK govt want? A city no one wants to visit, work or live?
