Michael Gove reflecting on the Brexit years on Political Currency: “My single piece of advice to any future prime minister is never, ever have a referendum on anything… because in practice, they end up creating far more problems than they resolve in and of themselves.”

The mood:

75% of people said the UK “has lost its way”, including 71% of 2019 Tory voters

Nearly 60% said they felt worse off now than 5 yrs ago

Asked to describe the state of the country using a film title, Matt in Basingstoke, who voted Tory five years ago, said Titanic

Grim reading. Patriotic sentiment an increasingly niche interest. 57% feeling worse off now than five years ago. Two thirds saying there's now nothing the party can do to win them back. 'Partygate' still routinely coming up, unbidden. Not much enthusiasm for Labour either, mind.
