It's a wonderful thing to see so many great writers honoured in this way. Congratulations to Hanif Abdurraqib and Kathryn Scanlan (both Gordon Burn Prize winners) and the truly brilliant Jen Hadfield, a poet of exceptional talent and skill.

Today’s task: hanging this splendid print of Carl on Eileen’s Couch (1981) by Tish Murtha British Culture Archive. Reminds me of The Death of Chatterton by Henry Wallis.

Did anyone watch the Tish documentary BBC iPlayer last night? More than a few parallels with Andrea Dunbar’s life.

A fragrance so powerful it was described as an airborne toxic event. Beloved by the women of Leeds and hairdressers across the land. One for all those with 80s mothers who wore it like a badge of pride.

This is the first time I’ve ever backed a winner. Well done, Kathryn. A phenomenal book that deserves all the prizes.
