Now on bioRxiv, a long-term collaboration between Alex Wang and Katie Ferguson on somatostatin interneuron development, with gorgeous synaptic data from Michael Higley 🧠🌈🔬 and Jyoti Gupta. SST cells in 🐭V1 have a unique developmental window right after 👁️opening!

This is pretty amazing: a single hominoid-specific genetic change leads to loss of the tail. What an incredible phenotype!

If I could snap my fingers and change everything, here is what I would do:

1) Have all publishing happen on a single, consolidated, 100% subsidized 'preprint' platform that publishes, formats, disseminates and archives all works of science with zero cost to authors or users.

It was great fun to work on this preprint with Dr. Robert Lees ibianco Rob Campbell Natalia Orlova 🇺🇦 Darcy Peterka @labrigger Dimitri Yatsenko Che-Hang Yu & Adam Packer.
Hope this helps many people to characterise their 2p microscopes biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

A new study by Petr Znamenskiy, Tom Mrsic-Flogel, and colleagues present findings that overturn a decade-long idea that inhibitory neurons provide blanket normalising inhibition, showing that for PV+ inhibitory neurons this is not the case. Read the story: sainsburywellcome.org/web/blog/revea…

~75K ns in the mm³.
I/O segregated by layers, function is columnar; the cortical column is the unit of cortical computation.

Finding brain connections is slow. So we present Optomapping!

With laser-activation of single inputs + postsynaptic patch, 100s of connections can be rapidly examined.

Led by Jesper Sjöström @pjsjostrom.bsky.social ‘s long vision, spearheaded by the talented & persistent Christina 😬. Glad to be part of this

How does the brain implement and switch between different behavioural strategies, such as explore, exploit or disengage? Remarkably, a small nucleus in the midbrain can do it all! A new, exciting direction for my lab led by the amazing Mehran Ahmadlou: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
