It is not about the IT industry. It is about basic freedoms and political rights. We put development before freedom/rights in Balochistan and failed. Replicating this at the national level will continue to fail as well.

But why is manufacturing different from services and agriculture? There China has been running persistent deficits. There should be something more to the savings/currency story to explain the disproportionate affect on manufacturing. No?

The goal post for SBP's infamous 'medium-term' inflation target has been shifted one more time. The authorities (and the IMF) now expect inflation to fall in the 5-7 range during FY26 (previous goal was end FY25, which was revised at least three times in a year).

Gross inflows from international private creditors were around $7bn in FY23 and FY24. These were around $10bn in the years before when debt servicing burden was much lower. Now IMF expects these to jump to $15bn+ even when debt servicing burden remains as high as it is. Crazy!

A group of EAG Pakistan researchers have been thinking carefully for more than a year about how we should assess Pakistan's economic productivity. Ahmed Jamal Pirzada summarises their findings for us in a series of threads, starting here:

I have posted my lecture slides for the PhD computational methods class I teach at UMN. The main focus is on methods for solving heterogeneous-agent models.
Hope you find them useful. Link below:

🧵 on our paper. Few more to follow. This one covers the part documenting lack of structural transformation we see in Pak and the role of dismal labour productivity growth. Link: rb.gy/98hd15

🧵 1/n: Pakistan’s economy has seen one of the lowest levels of structural transformation. At EAG, we used newly available datasets to study why this is the case. This is first of the few 🧵 we plan to do to share our findings. For more details, see here: eag.org.pk/wp-content/upl…

How labour productivity in the agriculture sector compares with the rest of the economy? Agriculture is one of least productive sector in Pak but engages almost 40% of the labour force. For more on low lab productivity growth in Pak, see our paper rb.gy/98hd15

Pak 'constitutionalists' scapegoating QFI & co after cheerleading them into disenfranchising masses at every stage on procedural grounds in the last one year. Now rediscovering their vocabulary.

Unlike many other developing economies, Pakistan's economy has undergone one the lowest levels of structural transformation in the last three decades. Why? See our paper here: rb.gy/98hd15

In a paper with Engin Kara, we use both microdata underlying UK CPI and multi-sector model to show how higher uncertainty can keep sticky infl higher even wen flexible infl falls. This is consistent with higher profits. As unc falls, infl returns to trend. cesifo.org/DocDL/cesifo1_…

QFI has etched his name in history as the chief judicial enabler of the most brazen & violent power grab by the military in decades. Doesn't matter what party you support, this decision to strip voters of a choice will rip Pakistani democracy apart, probably irreparably.

QFI and co worked hard to throw every roadblock in the way of a simple constitutional point of election in 90 days. He is now working hard in helping the authoritarian setup destroy what is left of democracy in Pakistan.
