Was just telling my kids how at Princeton in the late 90s some students occupied the President’s office for weeks, and everyone treated it as totally mundane. At Bard where I grew up it happened all the time. Heard that Guidos office at YLS was occupied too.

Our op-ed is FINALLY out!
As Israeli- and Arab-American Yale University faculty members, we describe our views of pro-Palestinian student protests & divestment encampments. We based our statements on our own experience.

The inimitable darryl li on the blog today, digging into the political economy of US imperialism and the US's role in the destruction of Gaza by looking at the circulation of one commodity: the 155mm artillery shell.

An absolute MUST READ!

This new UT Austin policy seems preposterously (if not unconstitutionally) overbroad. Anyone who is *arrested* for trespassing, but never charged (let alone convicted), is permanently barred from campus? What if the arrest was bogus? What if the arrestee is a student or employee?

Yesterday, John McWhorter, a linguist who the NYT gives space to opine about racism, wrote an op-ed that declared the Columbia protests to be “abusive” to Jewish students, and placed the blame for that abuse on “anti-racist academic culture.”

I have thoughts.🧵

The large-scale deployment of armed officers to suppress peaceful protest on college campuses around the country is a shocking development. This response to peaceful protest is an assault on free speech–and it is also deeply reckless. (1/x)

Nope, the protests have not led to the arrests. The arrests are the result of concerted decisions by administrators across campuses. Nothing natural or inevitable about the arrest of non-violent protestors.

New piece on H5N1.

I've spent weeks talking with officials from the FDA, USDA, CDC, WH, ASPR, etc., and with public health and agriculture people in various states about the growing H5N1 cattle outbreak.

It's not good. We're not responding properly.

It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor Caroline Fohlin came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, 'What are you doing?' That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.

From back in November:

'a number of prominent university administrators, subject to the intense pressures mentioned above, are increasingly treating protest speech as hate speech, seemingly regardless of the speakers’ intentions or declared positions.'

Hi! I'm a journalist at Columbia Journalism School, and I have been covering the encampments. My colleagues and I have been working non-stop delivering excellent coverage for days. I can speak to what's been happening, or share photo/film for interested outlets.
