Medicine is inseparable from how we live our lives in society at large, and medical schools do not prepare their graduates for the degree of activism needed to try and effect meaningful change.

Doctors, by and large (not everyone), are content to be part of the problem.

I thought poetry could change everything, could change history and could humanize, and I think that the illusion is very necessary to push poets to be involved and to believe. But now I think that poetry changes only the poet.

Relative to non-physicians, US doctors are less likely to vote, attend public meetings, volunteer, or otherwise be politically
engaged. In other words, we’re impressively accepting of abysmal health policy killing our patients but paying us quite well.
