This debate was encouraging as a step forward. Even taken on its own, the commitment to release the report on the Antonio Maria incident of last year will be welcomed by local fishermen, but there is still far more we need to see from the government.

Two UK Government ministers have now agreed that these incidents were intolerable and deliberately dangerous.

So, what will be done to deter this dangerous seamanship, and protect lives at sea?

Shetland Fishermen's Association welcomes today's commitments from Guy Opperman MP - Minister for Transport - and thank Alistair Carmichael MP for continuing to raise this issue in Parliament.

This morning Alistair Carmichael lead a Westminster hall debate on maritime safety breaches within the United Kingdom’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Mr Carmichael secured the debate to discuss solutions to repeated unsafe actions by non-local fishing vessels.

This follows on from the incident in October involving the French-registered Antonio Maria steaming in front and apparently trying to foul the propeller of the isles trawler Defiant.

Nothing more than an empty threat from an empty suit Prime Minister. Whatever the rhetoric, the Rwanda scheme remains a waste of time, a waste of taxpayer money - and a waste of the UK's reputation as a force for human rights in the world.

.@Libdems have called for a presumption of denial to arms to Israel since 2021. Applies to any country on the FCDO High Priority Human Rights list. Our Government should be ashamed that it continues to sell arms in these circumstances.
