A4: Often, people want to help, but don't know what to do. My best advice is to start by being there to simply offer a listening ear. Sometimes, it can be a comfort to be able to share your journey with someone who will take the time to listen.

A3: There are a number of different books within our library that I think provide valuable resources for learners dealing with cancer/grief. It is becoming more common for authors to highlight these topics in an effort to help students better navigate them.

A2: Two things that always stand out to me when individuals talk about battles with cancer is the resilient determination with which they continue to fight & the way in which it forces them to have a greater appreciation for the time they have/positive moments.

A1: I believe that teaching compassion & understanding comes when individuals can better relate to one another. Helping to educate learners about the people around them by providing opportunities for interactions & questioning is a good start.

Hi !

Shelli, Librarian from Texas.

Unfortunately, cancer has touched many individuals in my life...from my grandparents to my parents & myself. I would say that watching my loved ones battle this disease made them my heroes.

BQ: The days when you can visually see the positive impact you have on those around you is the biggest factor that keeps me involved in education. Knowing that you helped to bring about something positive for your students/coworkers is a great feeling.

A3: Although I've not been in public education a long time, it seems that every year the workload increases & there's little or no compensation for the extra duties placed on educators. This, combined with low pay leads to low morale & teachers exiting the profession.

A2: I think that working to better educate the governing bodies/funding sources is a start. Although organizations are working for change, it would be nice if nationally, educators had a way to stand together & campaign for true improvements.

A1: There are a number of factors that impact the discrepancy within teacher pay, but funding sources & the powers that influence education are two of the biggest ones. Until there is more agreement about the importance of proper funding, this is unlikely to change.
