@aoifeamcgowan It's funny how you're expected to share each and every little trauma to get into college, but once you get in, you can't dare let your mental health affect your work because that would be an 'excuse'

@aoifeamcgowan My teacher told us to never write in a college essay about the four Ds, Death, Divorce, Disease, or Daddys. And that really stuck with me. You shouldn’t have to share your trauma to get into college and it’s way too common of subjects in essays it’s old news to essay readers.

@aoifeamcgowan Why turn my trauma into a fun story for some guy to compare to another person and then whoever’s worse gets to go to college. Every single person has been through more than we could imagine. It’s incredible that we’re still here and planning the next 4+ years of our lives.

Treyvon Ervin george smiley's man titties @aoifeamcgowan ‘Had to’ as in ‘Feeling pressured into doing something a certain way out of fear that doing it otherwise would hurt one’s chances’. stop being obtuse.

@aoifeamcgowan @indudigital Sadly I have to say I was the opposite: pretty homophobic until I embraced I was myself a homo

@aoifeamcgowan this just reminded me that in my senior year english class we were “asked” (read: strongly encouraged) to read our college essays out loud in front of the class which in hindsight is reallyyy not cool

Renée Agatep Riya Sharma @aoifeamcgowan There's an unfortunate stereotype perpetuated that the best writers are the ones with the most trauma in their lives. Shakespeare had a normal life, wrote some of the greatest works of English lit, but people say he couldn't have because he wasn't fucked up enough.

@aoifeamcgowan This thread was a wild read for me as a scandinavian. The only personal thing I talked about in my uni application process was my passion for old artefacts.

For a long time I thought that the college essay thing was just a plot device in american tv/film.

Jordan Stevenson @aoifeamcgowan Caroline From a fellow low-income student who has faced trauma + homelessness, this piece was really eye opening and so close to home. You put words to the pain and barriers that we face everyday to success. Thank you for sharing

@aoifeamcgowan It’s because when colleges began to accept other ppl besides the rich and elite, they came up with ways to make you prove your worth and hardship as if college is a reward for struggle.

Tamanisha J John @aoifeamcgowan Had a similar experience this past PhD app cycle. Was pressured to discuss being an immigrant, etc. In fact, I was told not writing about it would prevent me from receiving an offer. It was uncomfortable. It felt as though only the severity of my traumas are what makes me worthy
