I’m often asked what people can do to drive change

One of the things I always say is listening. Passing the mic. Amplifying the voices of others, particularly when they have a lived experience of the topic that you don’t

We don’t value this form of change making enough

The news is gut-wrenching at the moment. It’s been an incredibly difficult period for people, particularly those whose identities have been discussed in the most abhorrent ways.

If we can, we should absolutely show up. But it’s important we do it well.

I say this as someone who’s worked in foreign affairs & domestic policy areas, and who’s been prohibited from publicly discussing issues I’ve worked on.

Yes it sucks, that’s the price I’ve paid to try and make a difference through that means. I know others experience this too.

I’ve seen people chastised as a result of appearing silent.

There are many reasons why people may not post their views on social media. It doesn’t mean people aren’t having important conversations - it can even be because they’re working on the issue that they can’t share a view

When I was a younger activist, I felt the pressure to be on the forefront of social issues, to give that spicy hot-take.

With more maturity, I know that hot-takes aren’t just unhelpful, they’re often ill informed and can spread misinformation.

One of the most important things I’ve learned in activism is that the world does not need people (me included) to have a hot take on everything, ESPECIALLY when it doesn’t involve me.

It’s okay to listen, to learn. To strategically amplify those who we should be listening to.

Young people are smart, switched on, & deserve a say in their futures.

This is the 3rd year we’ve run Raise Our Voice in Parliament & as always, I’m blown away by the ideas and passion in the speech submissions. How lucky we are to have great young leaders.
