Re-watching Oppenheimer. Anyone else notice EO Lawrence (who died in 1958) at the Fermi Award reception (in 1963)?

How does cyclohexanethiol compare with tert-butyl thiol as a HAT catalyst? Curious why one would use one over the other?

Found a compound made in my lab over 7 years ago is really good for a new transformation..... the bad news, the starting material which was expensive then has increased in price by 3x !

'The value of the tri-agency scholarships and fellowships has not changed in 20 years...

Canada now ranks 26th in the OECD in the proportion of those with graduate-level education.

These and other indicators illustrate a hollowing out of Canada’s research ecosystem.'

A facebook friend reminded me of Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls. Something I remember some of the more well off and plugged in kids having when I was very young, but I never had one.

Well, it's potato salad time, but I can hear the wind and driving rain picking up, so I think I am going to have to experience vicariously through others.

Related to my ranting about software from earlier. Here's the state of all my powerpoints that were done on my 2003 computer. Data rot has not spread to the 2012 model fortunately.

FWIW, there's a video of a nitric acid truck accident going around without warnings on the social medias. While not gory, it's likely a fatal incident, so be forewarned.

Apropos of nothing. A trend I noticed:
1) Somebody solves a problem the first time using a big complex fancy system.

2) Later on somebody finds a cheap reagent that everyone had in their lab can also do the same reaction.

There's an interesting lesson in how discovery works.

Weird little mac trick I found. When I'm working in something, and the pinwheel of death occurs, I often find taking a screenshot causes the pinwheel to resolve without crashing the program.
