What’s happening tonight at
Columbia University University and City College of NY is a travesty and a violation of both student and human rights.

This is a shameful day.

SWAT AND SRG HAVE INVADED COLUMBIA’S CAMPUS AND ARE ENTERING HIND’S HALL. THEY HAVE FORCED OUT ALL PRESS TO PREVENT RECORDINGS OF THEIR BRUTALITY.

I am outraged by the level of police presence called upon nonviolent student protestors on Columbia and CCNY’s campuses. As an educator who has first hand experience with the over-policing of our schools, this is personal to me.

We need to understand, urgently, that we either divest from imperialism or we get fascism. The ruling class is eagerly ushering in fascism at home to defend their fascism abroad. And we have to reject all of it, right now.

A motorcade of cops turning onto American Ave. from 125 St. heads to City College. There already scores if not hundreds of police in the CUNY Gaza solidarity encampment at the college that have pepper sprayed & arrested protesters. A small group of students have barricaded

Students at Columbia linking arms in front of the main gate to prevent NYPD from entering and arresting their comrades.

Arrests now.

If any kid is hurt tonight, responsibility will fall on the mayor and univ presidents.

Other leaders and schools have found a safe, de-escalatory path. This is the opposite of leadership and endangers public safety. A nightmare in the making.

I urge the Mayor to reverse course.

So they've turned a dozen blocks - a whole NYC neighborhood - into a fully locked down police zone to repress a small number of nonviolent students.

Shame on Columbia. Shame on the NYPD. Shame on Eric Adams & Governor Hochul. Shame on CCNY.

Mayor Adams is trying to bring the horrors of Kent State to NYC.

This is dangerous and reckless. The focus must be on de-escalation and protecting these students’ lives.
