My dispatch from the Pro-Palestine protest in Oxford today, one of the most... astonishing things I've ever seen Mississippi Today mississippitoday.org/2024/05/02/it-…

The reporters are trying to get answers from the mayor *on behalf* of the people on the other side of the TV screen...they're not chasing him for some cardio.

I wrote about the crackdown on campus protests.

Universities like Columbia, Cornell and Emory trade on Vietnam Era protests to market themselves to student activists. Protest is part of their brand and sales pitch. Now they're punishing students for taking them at their word. 🧵

The people in Nader's mentions hand-wringing about kids skipping class to protest must not be familiar with the (successful) 1963 CPS boycott where some 200K primary school-aged kids protested racial segregation (look up 'Willis Wagons') in the district.

The campus protests show us why local elections matter.

Your sheriffs are deciding how to treat protesters.

Your district attorneys are deciding whether to charge them.

Your judges are deciding whether to let them out on bail.

Can’t wait for the president of Columbia University to tell my industry what’s good journalism at the Pulitzers next week. Try not to trip over any hogtied student journalists while collecting your award.

Behind these cops is a memorial wall we set up for the journalists killed in this war.

The NYPD came into the journalism building at Columbia (where even outside press is not allowed at this time) to rest their legs and eat some snacks after a long night of arresting students.

These Columbia Journalism students need freelance assignments, not interview requests. They are on the cusp of graduation, desperate for experience and clips, with a front-row seat to the biggest story in America—pay them to tell it!

Living in Texas, UT protesters may be more likely to face police brutality.

But they're *less* likely to face criminal charges — because they have a progressive DA.

Your votes for prosecutors, judges, and sheriffs matter so much in moments like these:

A little dream came true! I joined It's Been A Minute to talk with Brittany Luse about how Black media in Chicago influenced the way Black Americans see themselves and why the city deserves to be called 'the heart of Black America.' 🖤 npr.org/2024/04/30/119…

The union at @wbez and @vocalo is collecting signatures for a petition that they will send to the CPM board and to the CEO to save Vocalo and the jobs eliminated in their recent layoffs. Please consider signing: actionnetwork.org/forms/savewbez…

I took one look at that business doofus’ post about banditing the Brooklyn half without training and while the 7:43 pace is dubious, I’m more skeptical of the notion anyone with boobs could run 13.1 miles in a spaghetti strap sports bra 💀

As someone who can fall asleep anywhere (I once fell asleep STANDING UP at a Detroit Cobras show) I read this with great interest.

Quality local news & culture journalism should be accessible to everyone. That makes WBEZ invaluable -- and the loss of Vocalo Radio 91.1 so intolerable. I signed here urging CPM to rethink these cuts (you can still add your signature, too!)

My latest: DCASE revealed it is paying Sundace $175k for a weekend of programming this summer. That's compared to $162,000 the Chicago International Film Festival has gotten in the past five years.
