There's been a bit of recent interest in long Emergency Department stays and risk of mortality. NHSE and DHSC have been trying to reduce the problems in Emergency Department with their Recovery Plan and the recently released Planning Guidance. So how's it going? a 🧵

Hearing that ED teams are under direct and at times unreasonable pressure to achieve NHSE's articifically low 4-hour standard. This is currently set at 76%. We risk hitting new lows in terms of crowding, and behaviours, in the face of sustained pressure on EDs. Royal College of Emergency Medicine 1/3

Pointless nudging a standard set at a level that isn’t improving long waits for our sickest patients, whilst “encouraging” hospitals to focus on the least sick. Patients can wait more than a day for a bed. How about being ambitious, and focusing on the root causes of crowding?
