An incredibly important piece. “The complexity of reading is inconvenient because
teaching reading requires teacher judgment, close obser-
vation of children, teacher expertise, and choosing among
multiple approaches.”ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

Excellent post. Kindergarten is NOT the new 1st grade and we all need to fight to keep play as the heart of early childhood. We are doing a huge disservice to our children by not honoring who they are and what they need as tiny humans. (And it’s not pushing phonics in PreK.)

Tens of millions of Americans have seen tangible improvements in their lives because of Biden. Any sane voter is thankful to have a White House that isn’t teetering on the brink of disaster. And our President did it all quietly. But guess what? That’s the point.

'...whatever gains had shown up in Mississippi’s fourth-grade scores had vanished by the eighth grade, when all students notched exactly the same scores in 2022 as they had in 2013... doesn’t much warrant the label 'miracle.'”

When we hold on to colour-blind ideologies we center our own comfort … young children are not too young to talk about race. -biaseducation centerforplayfulinquiry.com/voices/uolbsq6…

“Let’s use ALL the research, not just the research that sells particular phonics programs.” Absolutely. This is an extraordinary letter & captures my view on this issue. We must keep learning & growing as educators, keeping the children at the forefront of our talk-not a “war”.

Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. It is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace that is right for each individual child. Earlier is not better. ~ Magda Gerber

Absolutely. And if the teaching team isn’t a strong, supportive, collaborative relationship, then relationship & connection in the classroom is next to impossible. And has the potential to put teachers in fight or flight as well.

This whole thread is so important. And such a reminder for adults, too. Truly rethinking every 'no' answer before we give it makes such a difference. What can we gift permission to that would grant children (and us?) freedom of self-expression and freedom to be?
