While driving past the local high school yesterday, I noticed a student walking to school. Her head was down, but unlike almost every other student around her, she wasn’t scrolling her phone. She was reading a book. Walking and reading a book. And that put a smile on my face.

A few years ago, a student had a rough day and made some poor choices.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Coley,” she said with remorse.

“I forgive you,” I replied.

“You do?” she responded in genuine surprise.

A great reminder that students need to hear these words more often.
